In 1959, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus came to New York City. For Raymond, a professional photographer who worked and printed almost entirely black-and-white, the circus and its colorful characters provided an opportunity to try something different. After studying the carbon color print process with Sy Kattelson, Raymond installed color lab equipment into his darkroom.
Attending every circus showing and visiting smaller circuses in the area, Raymond put together a large series of color photos, some of which were exhibited in New York City's seminal Limelight Gallery in 1961. - Eleanor Jacobs
