Our friendship with Joel Grey began when Raymond had a one-man show of his color circus photos at the Limelight Gallery in Greenwich Village, NYC, in 1961. Joel, a photo buff, saw the show, loved it, and purchased a color photo of a dramatically made-up clown. The two became friends and as it was told to us, years laterJoel referred to that photo when he designed his make-up for his role as Master of Ceremonies in the original Cabaret on Broadway.
During rehearsals in 1967, Raymond and I visited Joel in his dressing room where Raymond shot Joel applying his makeup. - Eleanor Jacobs
